Tree climbing class was held today!

  • Down the hill to the river for the health food! Actually, soft-serve ice cream, popcorn shrimp baskets, and an incredible diversity of hamburgers. Duncan and I had "The Barbarian" upon the hamburger adds ham, two kinds of cheese, and a fried egg! Consuming it necessitated a post-prandial nap!
  • And across the street to the River Walk.
  • Note that there's a swimming pool complex just a couple blocks along.
  • There are old pilings all along the riverfront, marking the locations of the many canneries that used to be here.
  • Three dogs.
  • The River Walk proceeds along the train tracks. There used to be train service from Portland. Now there's a trolley that goes about 5 miles up and down along the river.
  • "Big Red" is a structure built for the fishermen to hang their nets to dry.
  • The battle to save "Big Red" is a long one. There are so few structures left that mark Astoria's fishing heritage.
  • Pilot boats come and go constantly -- coming in and out of the river over the hazardous Columbia Bar requires the assistance of a local pilot.
  • The trees around here are VERY subsstantial!
  • Even in the town park, there is a strong sense of forest.
  • Tree climbing class was held today!
  • Climber using a rope system to head up a large tree.
  • The town park is quite old and many structures are very mossy.
  • Walking through the trees, one gets an occasional glimpse of the Astoria Column.
  • The Column's spiral stairway has recently been restored. Plan to climb!

  • The view from our deck. The Astoria Megler Bridge connects Astoria, Oregon, with Long Beach, Washington.
  • We're wearing the pups out! But the napping is good here.
